Our Culinary Inspiration

The Okonomi concept was born from a desire to bring vibrant, authentic flavors to Northern Virginia. We think of ourselves as a "third culture kitchen"—blending Vietnamese, Korean, Hawaiian, and Japanese influences into dishes that reflect what Asian-American food actually looks like today.

When you dine with us, you are experiencing a true culinary fusion. Our menu is built on the comforting familiarity of Japanese rice bowls (donburi), the balance of the Korean rice dish bibimbap, and the refreshing brightness of Vietnamese chilled vermicelli noodle bowls (bún thịt nướng).

Meet Our Founder: Alex Kang

Okonomi Asian Grill is owned and operated by Alex Kang, a culinary professional with over a decade of experience in the food and beverage industry.

Alex's passion for Asian cuisine led him to travel to Vietnam for nearly two years to learn the country's culinary traditions from the ground up. During this time, he worked with non-profit hospitality organizations and alongside a Michelin-starred chef specializing in Vietnamese cuisine. He also opened multiple kitchens and built a dedicated following of food enthusiasts online. Alex crafted Okonomi’s menu to reflect a true 'third culture' approach—honoring deep-rooted, authentic Asian flavors while presenting them in a way that resonates with modern American diners.
